Daffodil Hill
Daffodil Hill
As we traveled north get to Grass Valley we passed by a really pretty place along the way, the original Daffodil Hill, Three hundred thousand of Daffodil all in one field, which includes 30 different varieties. You can stop there and look around and have a picnic, then buy some bulbs for your garden. I for one did not know there were that many kinds of daffodils.
Sorry to backtrack but I did not want to miss telling you about the daffodils. As we leave Nevada City heading north we cross the Yuba River as it goes through the canyon, I once panned for gold just below the bridge. But that was many years ago. Going on past the bridge about two miles and 25 curves in the road there is a place on the side hill that used to belong to a lady and her daughter, their name was O’dell, the daughters name was AnaBelle. Mrs O’dell was a very intelligent lady I really liked to talk to her.
Aleghany secluded Town
Quartz Gold
Continuing on we come to the turn off to Alleghany which has one main street, but it is also home to the famous 16 to 1 gold mine and has been in operation since 1850 and is a very rich mine. It is located in Sierra County along with several other small mountain towns, but Alleghany is more remote than the others as it is 20 miles from HWY 49. Camptonville is right on Hwy 49, it is now just one main street, it used to be home to thousands

On up the Hwy we come to Downieville the county seat of Sierra County, another town that has survived the end of the gold rush. They diversified into ranching and logging and some other things that help keep the area going. Then over the mountain is Loyalton and the intersection of Hwy 89 the two highways merge for a while and Hwy 49 ends and Hwy 89 continues on to Reno, Nevada and it ends there.
